Every renovation comes with surprises—some make your heart sink, and others remind you how lucky you are. It’s all part of building something beautiful.
Renovating a cabin is always an adventure, and today was no exception! It all began with a trip to Home Depot to pick up baseboards and grout sponges. The day seemed routine—until I noticed a missed call from Eddie, our contractor. When I called him back, his first words were:
“We have a problem.”
My stomach sank. “What kind of problem?” I asked, bracing myself.
“You’ve had a pipe burst. Someone left the water on. I’ve shut off the water and stopped the flow to your outdoor sink.”
“Oh no!” I replied, feeling a wave of anxiety wash over me. All I could think about was the cost of fixing a burst pipe. Unexpected expenses are the kind of surprises no homeowner wants. The entire drive to the cabin, my mind raced, imagining worst-case scenarios.
When I arrived, I immediately went to inspect the damage. To my relief, all the water had spilled into the outdoor cabinets. Then, after some closer inspection, I noticed something surprising: the outdoor sink on the deck wasn’t connected to the cabin’s plumbing system—it was hooked up to a garden hose! The problem wasn’t a burst pipe inside the cabin but a leaky outdoor faucet.
What a relief! No structural damage, no flooded floors, just a simple outdoor issue to fix. The solution? Replacing the leaky faucet ASAP. It could have been so much worse, and I’m grateful it turned out to be an easy fix.
Making Progress Inside the Cabin
After the drama outside, walking into the cabin was a welcome sight. The new flooring on the main level is stunning, and we’re thrilled with how it turned out. The tile work upstairs and downstairs is equally beautiful, giving the cabin a fresh and polished look.
The newly installed ceiling fan is a game-changer. Not only does it look fantastic, but the amount of air it circulates is impressive. With just the press of the remote, the cabin feels cool and comfortable. It’s the little upgrades like this that make such a big difference.
The bedroom updates are another highlight. The new overhead lights have been installed, so no more relying solely on lamps for lighting. Of course, every bedroom will still have lamps with USB chargers for your devices—because convenience matters.
The Surprises You Expect in Renovations
No renovation is complete without a few surprises along the way. One unexpected challenge was discovering the bathroom floor upstairs had rotted around the toilet. Eddie and his team had to replace the subfloor, which was an unforeseen but necessary fix.
Another surprise was the height difference between the subflooring in the kitchen and the main living area. Thankfully, Eddie worked his magic and made the transition between the two spaces seamless. It’s moments like these that remind me how valuable it is to have a skilled and resourceful contractor on the job. Thank you, Eddie, for going above and beyond!

Looking Ahead
The painters are arriving tomorrow to start removing the wallpaper, and we couldn’t be more excited. Over the next couple of weeks, this space is going to be transformed even further. The baseboard molding is being installed throughout the living room, kitchen, and main floor bathroom, which will bring everything together beautifully.
I’ll be heading back to the cabin before Christmas to check on the progress and capture some photos to share with all of you. It’s amazing to see this dream of ours coming to life, and we’re so grateful for your support and excitement along the way.
Thank you for being part of this transformation journey with us. Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime, we wish you all the very best for the holidays!
