We never get tired of driving out to the cabin. Even if it’s just for a couple of hours, it always feels like a mini-escape—a chance to breathe, relax, and check in on the progress of our renovation journey. This week was no exception, and there’s so much to share as we inch closer to turning our vision into a cozy Poconos cabin rental experience.
Painting Progress: Bringing New Life to the Cabin
The painters are still hard at work, and as you can imagine, they’re eager to wrap up what has been an intensive project. Painting every surface of the cabin has been a lengthy and meticulous process, but the results are already breathtaking.
One of the biggest milestones this week was completing the transformation of the third loft bedroom. The artist’s motif left by the previous owners—a unique but dated feature—has been completely sanded, spackled, and painted. While we appreciate the creativity and love that went into it, we wanted a cleaner, more inviting look for our guests. Now, the room feels fresh, warm, and perfectly aligned with the cabin’s cozy aesthetic.
Another highlight was stepping into the main bedroom on the first floor. The walls now wear the historic Wyndham Cream color. Stepping into the room, we immediately felt its warm and inviting tone. It’s subtle yet transformative. We think you’ll love how it creates a cozy and relaxing environment.
Small Details, Big Impact
One of the things we’re learning throughout this process is how small details make a big difference in creating a memorable experience. For example, we’ve replaced all the cabin doors, and many are now painted and adorned with new black hardware, including matching black hinges. This simple update gives the cabin a modern yet timeless charm, and we’re thrilled with how it’s turning out.
Jen has been busy researching ways to ensure every guest’s stay feels special. She’s combed through hundreds of Airbnb reviews to identify common likes, dislikes, and pet peeves. One guest mentioned traveling with an “Airbnb go-bag” because essentials are often missing. We’re determined to create an experience where no such bag is needed!
For example, some reviews noted a lack of hooks on bathroom doors for towels. Jen has already ordered towel hooks, ensuring every bathroom is functional and convenient. Her long list of essentials includes emergency toiletries kits, hairdryers, and fully stocked bathrooms. We’re committed to anticipating your needs so you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of our cabin.
Deck Repairs and Nature Views
Let’s talk about the second-story deck—a standout feature of the cabin that’s been getting a much-needed facelift. Initially, we noticed one corner sagging, creating a slight downward incline. Addressing this issue became a top priority to ensure our guests could safely enjoy the stunning views.
The deck has been leveled, and new railing posts replaced the old ones. During the repair, we discovered rotted wood in the rim joists. Fixing this structural issue now ensures the deck is safe and sturdy for everyone to enjoy.
With the repairs complete, the deck offers the perfect spot to soak in nature and enjoy the peaceful sounds of the woods. Morning coffee on this second-story retreat will feel magical. This deck is now a safe, serene retreat where the beauty of the outdoors takes center stage.
Inside the Poconos Cabin Rental: Updates and Delays
Inside, the transformation continues at full speed. The kitchen cabinets are coming together beautifully, and though there are still touch-ups to be done, we’re thrilled with how everything is shaping up. The appliances we ordered on Black Friday were delayed, but we now have a new delivery date for next week. While the delay was frustrating, we appreciated Home Depot’s transparency about the mix-up and are looking forward to having the kitchen fully functional soon.
In the bathrooms, the painters are spackling and painting the walls, restoring them to their former glory. The tilework is laid and awaiting grout, while the loft bathroom is nearing completion. And though it’s not the most glamorous update, we’re excited to install a new well water pressure tank, water filter, and water softening system. These behind-the-scenes upgrades ensure our guests enjoy the comforts of home, like soft water for showers and clean, filtered drinking water.
What’s Next?
Once the painters wrap up this week, we’ll be shifting our focus to furnishing the cabin—a hands-on task we’re taking on ourselves. With a pile of furniture ready for assembly, we’re gearing up for what we’ve affectionately dubbed the “Allen Key Olympics.” It’ll be a whirlwind of screwdrivers, instructions, and perseverance, but we can’t wait to share the finished product with you.
